Charlie Telfer - A Discovered Talent from Central Scotland

Playing for United

Being a massive football fan I am always looking for new talent to spot. I might be a Dundee United fan but I look much further than that when searching for new talent.

Yes you can watch national teams and see what that particular country has to offer. However, why would you want to search for talent in a national team when you already know that they are good players.

Scoring goals for United

For me, I enjoy watching Under 20s play. This allows me to see what players to look out for. Over the years I have found many players to admire from a far. One of these players names is Charlie Telfer.

Born 4th July 1995, makes him 20 years old. Charlie has played for Scotland at Under 17s as well as Under 19s before moving onto the Under 21s level, which he is playing in currently.

Now that he is at Tannadice I am able to see Charlie grow as a player. However, when he signed for Dundee United on 2nd June 2014 I already knew what type of player he was and couldn't wait to see him play for my team.

While watching United Under 20s for the past three years I saw Charlie play while he was with Rangers. He was at the Glasgow club for 11 years, he signed his first contract in 2003 at the age of 8. In 2011, Charlie signed his first professional contract. This meant that Charlie was able to play for the Under 20s and First Team at Rangers.

Being unveiled as a Dundee United player

Unfortunately for Charlie, he only played one game for the First Team at Rangers. Although he did play many games for the Under 20s before moving to the Tannadice club where he is getting plenty of first team games.

Over the past four seasons I have started admiring Charlie more and more. The first season I just watched him when he played against United Under 20s. However, the more I started getting into 20s football I started watching out for him more and more. Some people will think I am crazy for watching and admiring a massive rival of my club for two seasons.

I knew that Charlie would eventually get onto bigger and better things which at the time Rangers couldn't give him. Possibly due to the situation that Rangers were in at this time. When I found out that Charlie was possibly signing for Dundee United, I was so pleased because I know how good our youth system would provide Charlie with the games that he deserves.

With me watching him properly for two years I knew what to expect from him when he arrived at Tannadice. Him signing on my birthday was the best day ever. One of my favourite Scottish player had signed for my club.

After Charlie scoring number 6 against Dundee

In my opinion, I think Charlie will continue and grow at Tannadice. I am very much looking forward to what he has to offer in this coming season. However, can anything really top him scoring number 6, yes you read that right, number 6 against local rivals Dundee. This was a record breaking goal as well as a great goal. I am really hoping that in this coming season (2015/16), Charlie is able to show the United fans what he is really made of. More first team starts and hopefully more goals.

Starting XI (St Mirren): Kello, Naismith, McAusland, Tesselaar, Kelly, Teale, Goodwin, McLean, Drury, Reilly, Ball

Booked: Naismith, McAusland, Goodwin and McLean
Subs Used: Marwood and Caldwell

My Man of the Match: Charlie Telfer

On the back of the win in the Quarter Finals of the League Cup, United were feeling confident even though the team had mega chances due to the cup game.

They started out the stronger team with Bilate having an early chance but his attempt was saved. Kelly was up at the other end trying to get the early lead for the Saints but nothing came of his shot.

For the first ten minutes of the game, nothing really happened. Only McLean and Ciftci had shots on goal but they both missed.

No action for five minutes, helped to build the confidence in the United players. Telfer and Ciftci doing well to try and gain possession for United. Ciftci also had a chance on goal. 17 minutes in and St Mirren were back confident. Ball and McAusland both having good attempts on goal which United managed to deal with sufficiently. Play was in favour of the home side for a short period of time until Kelly and Drury stopped the corners that United had gained coming to anything.

A very boring final 20 minutes, saw St Mirren having the majority of the possession with United having short bursts of good possession.

44th minute, Paul Paton finally broke the dead lock. An assist from youngster Connolly allowed Paton to put the ball right footed into the back of the net. It was 1-0 United.

Goodwin had the final chance of the half but his shot went over the bar, allowing United to go into the break with a goal advantage

Half Time Dundee United 1 - 0 St Mirren

Second half begun. Quickly fouls start coming out and free kicks start to be taken. Just as it looked like United were going to get their second of the afternoon, the Saints denied their possession going any further.

Drury and McLean both had attempts on goal but they were no match for the strong United defence and Cierzniak in goals. 5 minutes gone in the second half and it was mostly St Mirren who had possession.

55th minute, Aidan Connolly came out of nowhere to give United their second of the afternoon. A brilliant assist from Telfer allowed Connolly to place the ball right footed into the back of the net.

Minutes later Connolly had another pop at goal but it was saved by Kello in the St Mirren goal.

A series of substitutions made, re-boosted both of the teams. However, United were still the better team which was boosted by the United fans singing to help their team along. Butcher had an attempted saved in the 61st minute. Armstrong tried to get United's third goal in the 65th minute but his shot went just wide of the post.

Telfer was now having a shot at goal, his shot was blocked in the box. This worried the St Mirren defence as United were looking too powerful for them.

72nd minute, Charlie Telfer gets his first senior goal for the club. An assist again by Connolly allowed Charlie to blast it into the back of the net. This sent the United fans wild as they just went top of the league again thanks to Partick Thistle equalising with Hamilton at the same time.

With 'We are top of the league, say we are top of the league' being chanted by the United fans. Confidence in the players grew and it was shown in their play for the last 15 minutes of the game.

Paton was proving a vital part of the team along with Telfer who both continued to press along with Armstrong. St Mirren did have a few chances in the closing stages but they weren't able to get past the United defence.

It ended after injury time with United winning by 3 goals to 0, as well as going top of the league.

Full Time Dundee United 3 - 0 St Mirren

My man of the match was Charlie Telfer because he has shown how good a player he is and how much he deserves to be in the first squad during his time playing for the Under 20s. His passion for the game and delight for finally getting his first senior goal and 90 minutes in the bag. I personally hope that this is just the beginning of something amazing that Charlie could have at Tannadice.

Subs: Harris, Stanton, Heffernan, Kennedy, Sinclair, Booth and Perntreou
Booked: Stevenson
Subs Used: Stanton, Kennedy and Harris

Starting XI (Dundee United): Cierzniak, Souttar, Fojut, Townsend, Spittal, Connolly, Paton, Rankin, Mackay-Steven, Dow and Erskine
Subs: Dillon, Ciftci, Armstrong, Bilate, Telfer, Smith and Szromnik
Booked: Cierzniak, Fojut and Paton
Subs Used: Armstrong, Smith and Ciftci

My Man of the Match: Radoslaw Cierzniak

Both teams were looking to make the most of playing each other for probably the last time this season. Both teams met during pre season and Dundee United ran out winners in that game.

It was Hibs who started off strongly. Five minutes in and they had an attempt on goal through Gray. However, this was this was the only real action of the game until the 12th minute.

In the 12th minute, Chris Erskine broke the dead lock. A left footed shot from outside the area, saw United go 1 goal up, in the early stages of the game.

Again no action until the 16th minute when Dominique Malonga equalised for Hibs. Another left footed shot from the centre of the box allowed them to equalise.

2 minutes and 20 seconds later, United are back in the lead this time it was through youngster Aidan Connolly. Another left footed shot from the centre of the box, gave United the lead they would need to hold on to.

20 minutes gone, during the next 10 minutes there is no action in either ends of the park with both teams just gaining free kicks all over the park. Hibs looked like they were going to equalise in the 30th minute through Cummings and Craig. This pressure continued right up until the break, with Allan adding to Cummings and Craig who were having shots on the United goal.

Erskine would have the last kick of the half where it ended 2-1 to the visitors.

Half Time Hibernian 1 - 2 Dundee United

Craig was straight back into the game for Hibs and started to pressure the United defence. Youngster Connolly also had an early chance to extend the visitors. This was the only chance that the visitors had until the 56th minute.

Pressure from Hibs proved to be working as they managed to break down the United defence and push back further and further with every chance they could get.

56th minute, Jason Cummings finally got the goal that he was wanting since the middle of the first half. This allowed the home side to equalise.

Craig tried to extend Hibs lead but nothing came of it. United managed to get back into the game and started to pressure the Hibs defence. Erskine had an attempt blocked.

A corner in the 60th minute allowed Ryan Dow to header the ball into the back of the net giving the visitors the lead on the hour mark.

Cummings was back in the site of the goal but his shot was just too high. Ciftci also tried to get the ball into the back of the net. It was neck and neck right up to the 75th minute. Both teams had shots on goal but nobody was able to place it into the back of the net.

77th minute, Hibs equalised through Matthew Kennedy. A right footed shot from outside the box allowed the home side to get back into the game.

Allan, Armstrong, Craig and Harris had shots for their respective teams but nothing game of the closing stages of the game.

It ended in a 3 all draw for both sides. Extra time was brewing.

Full Time Hibernian 3 - 3 Dundee United

Extra Time:

Dundee United started off the first half of extra time strongly with Townsend having an attempt on goal but wasn't able to make much of the attempt.

It was a very boring 15 minutes, United were looking like the better team but weren't able to get the vital goal that they needed.

Half Time Hibernian 3 - 3 Dundee United

Ciftci started of the second half of extra time, very quickly. This allowed United to have a few minutes of good possession. Craig once again spoils United's party by taking over possession and having a pop at goal.

Thankful for United the Hibs possession didn't last very long and they were back having the upper hand. Dow and Armstrong having shots for United.

In the closing stages of extra time it was neck and neck, and nobody was breaking away. This meant penalties.

Subs: Townsend, Dow, Connolly, Spittal, Telfer, Smith and Szromnik
Booked: Watson and Rankin
Subs Used: Dow, Connolly and Spittal

Subs: Stevenson, Gallacher, Frans, Carroll, Eccleston, Wilson and McDaid
Booked: McMillan, Bannigan, Osman and Seaborne sent off
Subs Used: Carroll, McDaid and Stevenson

My Man of the Match: Sean Dillon

It was the first match after the international break for both teams. Dundee United were looking to keep pressure on Hamilton at the top of the league and Partick Thistle were looking to gain more points to climb the table.

For the first two minutes or so there wasn't much action from either of the teams. It was Partick who go the first major chance of the game as Morris gave away a corner. However, this corner didn't help play.

Four minutes in and the action started to build. Erskine having a shot on goal but it just went wide of the post. Right up until ten minutes in only Doolan and Craigen had attempts on goal.

Right up until the 15th minute, there wasn't much action at all. Both teams didn't create much action at all. It was end to end play which wasn't very exciting to watch for the over 6 thousand strong crowd watching.

20 minutes gone and it was United who were getting back into the game with the team having two good chances.

For the remainder of the first half, it was mostly dominated by the home side. However, the last 5 minutes Partick Thistle tried to get back into the game. Ciftci stopped the away side gaining the lead as the teams went into the second half.

Half Time Dundee United 0 - 0 Partick Thistle

Second half under way and the half time talk seemed to work wonders for Partick Thistle who took control of the first 5 minutes of the game.

United managed to get back into the game with two corners in a row. These never managed to come anything though. They were still managing to pressure the Partick back line.

10 minutes in and both teams are back neck and neck. Ciftci and Lawless having a shot for their sides just to name a few of the attempts that were taken right up until the hour mark.

Bookings and substitutions filled right up until the 80th minute.

Pressure from United in the closing stages of the game got the United crowd excited and pushing their team to get the three points that they vitally needed.

Partick were still pressuring with Elliot doing well at breaking down the United defence.

83rd minute, Seaborne brings Nadir Ciftci down in the penalty area. Ciftci himself stepped up to the mark to take the penalty. A right footed shot goes past Fox to give United the lead with less than 7 minutes of regulation time to go.

This goal gave United the boost they needed and continued to stop Partick getting past the half way mark. Craigen was the only Partick player who managed to get forward through the boosted United team. Spittal had the last attempt of the game.

It ended with Ciftci getting the only goal of the game and United getting the vital three points after a poor game for both sides.

Full Time Dundee United 1 - 0 Partick Thistle

My man of the match was Sean Dillon because he shows what a captain should do for the team. He managed to get the team sorted out and made sure that they were pressuring as much as they could. Other than doing captain duties, he also done well at defending. After coming back from a small injury he has done well to get back into the team.

My Man of the Match: John Rankin

Kick off time. Dundee United are looking to make sure that they can go five points clear and Kilmarnock are looking to get 12 points at home for this season.

10295318
It was Kilmarnock to start. Kilmarnock started pressuring the United back line very quickly. The first minute is played in the Kilmarnock half with United not having much of the ball.

The first couple of minutes is all about Kilmarnock pressure with Johnston making it difficult for United to break away. Rankin manages to help United try and break down Kilmarnock, however nothing pays off for the Terrors.

Ciftci tries to play Armstrong who is waiting in the box. Armstrong doesn't manage to get enough power on it and Samson collects it easily. Up the other end Magennis has a fantastic chance on goal, Cierzniak makes a fantastic save to give Kilmarnock the corner.

The first ten minutes of the game is all about Kilmarnock who are use to the 3G surface at Rugby Park. Kilmarnock show that they are a good team and will be a challenging team for United tonight. United fans start chanting in the stand to try and get some motivation for the United side. It seems that the United fans managed to give the team some motivation as they push up the park and begin to put pressure on the Kilmarnock back line.

10295294

Cierzniak is doing well to prevent Kilmarnock from taking the lead, a series of good saves shows his skill as a keeper to help his team keep a clean sheet. United continue to put pressure on the Kilmarnock goal with captain Dillon having a shot at goal, there just wasn't enough on it, Samson lets it bounce and collects it.

The opening 20 minutes has been very mixed with Kilmarnock being the happier side, however United still having their out bursts of possession which could prove difficult for Kilmarnock if they do it rightly.

Fantastic opportunity for United, 25 minutes in and Dillon puts the ball past Johnston towards Ciftci. However the ball is just wide of the post and Ciftci isn't able to control it to put it into the back of the net. This has given United an extra boost to get up the park as the half hour mark approaches.

Half hour mark and United have gotten a boost of confidence. They manage to put pressure on the Kilmarnock goal for a couple of minutes. A few good attempts at goal, unfortunately they never game to anything. United continue to press.

10 minutes to go of the first half and it is all end to end play. Neither teams managing to break the dead lock. Both teams are putting pressure on both goals.

10295310

Magennis had an open goal with the United defence struggling to get back. However it hits the crossbar. Pressure is building on the Kilmarnock goal. Quickly play is moved back up towards the Kilmarnock goal where United are given a corner.

With minutes remaining, it continues to be an end to end game. Both teams are having good attempts on goal but neither team looking like they are going to break the dead lock. The best chance of the half came in around the 35th minute from Magennis.

A very poor first half and it ends with both teams unable to break the dead lock.

Half Time Kilmarnock 0 - 0 Dundee United

The second half will prove to be vital for both teams. Brennan will start the second half  due to Samson having a broken toe after a Armstrong challenge. United get the second half under way.

United start the second half well with them having the possession to start off with. Kilmarnock doesn't let this face them as they quickly gain back possession. Ciftci and Dillon do well to link up to try and get the ball up the park but Kilmarnock win it back once again.

Five minutes into the second half and the United half time talk seems to be working well. They are the team who is causing the most bother for the keepers. Paton has a very ambitious shot on goal but other than that it is mostly just trying to get the team up the park. Johnston continues to prove difficult for United to get past.

10295332

As the hour mark approaches, Kilmarnock once again are the better team on the park. United are having their usual bursts of pressure like they did in the first half. Nothing major happens.

62 minutes on the clock, Kilmarnock are able to get past the United defenders and Tope Obadeyi gives the home side the lead.

65 minutes on the clock, Kilmarnock double their lead. Mark Connolly. Blasts it past Cierzniak.

After going down 2-0 very quickly, United need to try and get back into the game. Mackay-Steven is brought on for Armstrong to try and change the game for the Terrors.

70 minutes on the clock and both teams are having equal possession. However, Kilmarnock aren't letting United break through them. United are trying very hard to get back into the game. Mackay-Steven has a shot on goal, it is just over the bar.

75 minutes gone and Adeyemo makes his debut for the club after replacing Ciftci. United doing well to try and keep the ball in the Kilmarnock half. A Erskine shot on goal saved by Brennan and Adeyemo is waiting but doesn't manage to get a good shot on the ball.

10295372

10 minutes to go, United still doing as much as they can to get back into the game. Muirhead replaces Eremenko. The ball remains in Kilmarnock possession.

Shot on goal from Paton with five minutes to go adds some pressure to the Kilmarnock back line. Muirhead shot on goal gains a wonderful save from Cierzniak. Kilmarnock looking to extend their lead with four minutes remaining.

United struggle to do much more in the Kilmarnock half. Three minutes is added on. This is an opportunity for United to get a goal back. Brennan is doing well to keep United at bay.

Not much pressure from United in stoppage time instead Kilmarnock are keeping the pressure on the United goal.

It ends 2-0 Kilmarnock, top of the league could be gone by the end of the weekend for United. Kilmarnock deserved the win. They were the better team on the night.

Full Time Kilmarnock 2 - 0 Dundee United

My man of the match was John Rankin because he was able to control the majority of the action that he was faced with. Every game he has managed to control the area that he is in. He gave 100% for the whole 90 minutes even though the score line wasn't what United expected.

Subs: Lappin, Morgan, Banks, Miller, Brown, Easton and Kerr
Booked: Wotherspoon
Subs Used: Lappin and Morgan

My Man of the Match: Chris Erskine

This is the first time there has been a Tayside derby since the cup final in May. United were hoping that they would be able to get back to winning ways over the Perth side as they struggled last season.

United started the game off strong. Dow and Ciftci proving vital in a strong start for the Terrors.

St Johnstone don't let United away with an easy start to the game with Mackay doing well to pressure the United back four. End to end play began the first 20 minutes of the game.

22 minutes in and United are pressing right up the park. Ciftci onto the ball and it meets Chris Erskine's feet. A right footed shot, sees United go a goal up.

Play restarted and United were up for getting the double. It was all about the United end.

St Johnstone tried to get back into the game around the half an hour mark. They managed to get a corner however nothing came of it.

St Johnstone fouled the United side, quiet a lot in the closing stages of the first half. Other than the fouls and free kicks. It was only really end to end play with nothing really coming of the game.

The first half ended with United having the lead which could see them continue to be top of the league if they are able to keep the lead.

Half Time Dundee United 1 - 0 St Johnstone

The second half kicked off and St Johnstone started the second half strongly with Anderson having an attempt on goal 5 minutes into the second half. This was closely followed by Bilate having an attempt at the other end for United.

Right up until the hour mark, St Johnstone came out of nowhere and started dominating the park. Attempts from Lappin and O'Halloran were denied to prevent St Johnstone equalising.

There wasn't much action from either teams other than Ciftci having attempts on goal. This pressured the St Johnstone team.

71st minute, Paul Paton gets a left footed shot right into the centre of the box after a lovely assist from Watson. United double their lead.

Play restarted and St Johnstone didn't want the United to get another goal. It again was end to end play with Lappin having a few attempt for St Johnstone but they weren't able to break down the United defence.

There wasn't much action in the last 15 minutes of the game. For United it was pretty much all about making sure that they kept their two goal advantage.

The game ended with United getting the three points and staying top of the lead with a two goal lead over St Johnstone.

Full Time Dundee United 2 - 0 St Johnstone

My man of the match was Chris Erskine because since he went on loan to Partick Thistle last season he has come on leaps and bounds. In recent games he has shown how far he has come. He has shown how much he deserves to be in the starting XI. He gives his 110% in every game he is involved in and I know that there is more to come from Chris.

Subs: Mackay-Steven, Erskine, Bilate, Telfer, Smith, Szromnik and Spark
Booked: Rankin
Subs Used: Bilate, Erskine and Mackay-Steven

Starting XI (Dundee): Letheren, Irvine, Konrad, McPake, McGinn, Ferry, Boyle, McAllister, McGowan, Stewart and Tankulic
Subs: McBride, Bain, Roberts, Clarkson, Harkins, Kerr and Wighton
Booked: Boyle (Sent Off) and Irvine
Subs Used: Roberts

My Man of the Match: Radoslaw Cierzniak

It was time for the second derby of the week. This time in the League Cup. United were in high spirits due to the win at the weekend over their rivals.

However, it was Dundee who started the game strongly with them taking the majority of the possession in the first 10 minutes of the game. Attempts from Boyle and Tankulic were held well by the United back line.

For the next five minutes United tried to get back into the game however this wasn't good enough for the Dundee team.

Penalty Dundee, Rankin fouled McGowan in the box. Greg Stewart stepped up to the mark. Cierzniak SAVED. Cierzniak, managed to kick the ball away with his foot, to prevent Dundee from taking the lead in the 17th minute.

Not much action happened in the next ten minutes of the game. 25 minutes gone and Tankulic missed an attempt.

Sending off, Dundee. Martin Boyle, a straight red for Boyle due to foul play on Dow. This left Dundee down to 10 men within the first 30 minutes of the game.

With the half hour mark approaching and Dundee down to ten men. United tried to get back into the game. It was end to end until the 35 minute mark.

United were looking like the better team as the first half came to a close. Two corners in quick succession allowed the team to get back into the game.

Attempts from both ends ended the half. A goalless half, saw a very vital second half coming up.

Half Time Dundee United 0 - 0 Dundee

Second half begins and it's all about Dundee United.

Attempts from Paton, Ciftci and Armstrong saw United look stronger after the half time talk. In the first ten minutes of the first half it was all about United.

Right up until the 70th minute, United were doing everything they could to pressure the Dundee defence and goal. Nothing managed to happen.

The sold out United end got right behind their team and sung their hearts out.

Other than attempts for United and pressure from United, nothing else really happened right up until the 83rd minute.

In the closing stages of the game, both teams were doing as much as they could to get back into the game and do everything they could to try and break the dead lock.

Into stoppage time, 92 minutes gone and a final corner for United before extra time would have to begin. Jarsolaw Fojut, header the ball up and over Letheren's head in the Dundee goal.

Fojut's 92nd minute goal sent the United crowd wild. That was the last play of the game and after a very long drawn out game. United managed to break the dead lock. It ended with United getting through to the next round.

Full Time Dundee United 1 - 0 Dundee

My man of the match was Radoslaw Cirrzniak because over the past few games he has shown how much he has come on as a keeper and has really proven his worth to the team. His fantastic penalty save to stop Dundee gaining the lead and his other fantastic saves throughout the game, gained him my man of the match award.
